How to get a better score in IELTS Reading Test

Many students and examinees have constantly been worrying about how to get a near perfect score of 8.5-9 in the IELTS Reading test. This is because there is a notion that getting a high score in IELTS Reading is almost an impossible task for non-native English speakers. They have the idea that scoring high is very hard in this module as they simply cannot know all that complicated and tricky vocabulary. It is a fact that one might come across unknown words or phrases in the Reading test, but that is perfectly normal for any language that has not been your mother tongue. Be rest assured that this will not pose any problem for achieving a high score in this Test.

The primary aim of IELTS Reading Test

The main objective of IELTS Reading Test is to assess your ability to understand what you read and how perfectly you can grasp its meaning and usage. So, it’s perfectly fine even if you do not know certain words. You can presume their meaning and still get a Band 9! The Reading module has three sections, which means you are supposed to read three different texts. There are many questions for each section, and you get 60 minutes to read the texts and answer all the questions. This is not an easy task, but a systematic and consistent approach based on rigorous practice can surely guarantee success for you.

Here are some tips which will assure a great score for you in this section.

1Fill in the answer sheet as and when you aim for the questions:

In the examination hall, you will be provided with a Booklet with all the questions along with an answer sheet. Always keep in mind that the answer sheet is most important, as all your answers must be recorded in it. If you write your answers only in the booklet, your answers won’t be taken into account. We have noticed that many test- takers tend to while away a lot of time by first writing the answers in the booklet and then transferring them to the answer sheet. This leads to a lot of time waste and finally they don’t even get time to transfer all the answers to the answer sheet. So, an important tip to score high in the Reading Test is fill the answer sheet simultaneously when you attempt the questions. Keep the booklet in front of you so that you can read the texts and questions at ease, and also write down the answers as you progress with the test.

2. Keep the complicated and difficult questions to attempt at the end:

Although this tip appears to be quite simple and pragmatic, actually it helps a lot to score high in this test. Many students who appear for the exam, waste a lot of valuable exam time by trying to attempt difficult questions. It not only puzzles you, but also diminishes your self-confidence. At the end you will not get time to answer even the easier, sure-shot questions, of which you are hundred percent sure. So, when you face a tricky and hard question that you are not sure about, just leave it and attempt the easier ones. You can return to the same at the end if you have time.

3. Prepare thoroughly and practice doing lots of Reading Test :

This is extremely important as we all know that there is no short cut to success! Practice many times before you sit for the actual test. This will not only give you a fair idea about your strengths and weaknesses, but you will also have a schematic approach as how to answer each type of questions. You will know how to utilise your time properly, and your time management will be near perfect towards the end. You will not stress much racing against the clock. Of course, one can never guarantee a full proof plan for the actual test, but this works to a great extent!

4Perfect yourself at Scanning:

Scanning is a reading method that allows you to find information faster.  In this manner, you browse through the text smoothly, in a wavelike manner, but do not read everything word by word. This is a great method for understanding the main ideas of a text for finding the information you will want to read in more detail. In the Reading module, each paragraph has a main idea, and that idea is expressed in the topic sentence. It is usually present in the first sentence of a paragraph, but it might appear at the end too sometimes. The topic sentence expresses the main idea of the whole paragraph. So, if you are able to easily identify them, your half the struggle is done. Now you only have to read the information and answer perfectly. Scanning also helps you to identify key words and numbers fast.

5. Improve your reading speed:

This is perhaps the golden rule for achieving a great score in this module. And the only way to do this is to read more, as that is  also the only way you will be faster, better and an expert at reading. Do a lot of practice tests to work on reading texts and questions. Always set a time, as this will help you to assess your progress with your reading speed. It is always a good idea to read texts and articles that are more like the IELTS text in terms of length and difficulty. Read the newspaper on a daily basis, ensure that you go through various scientific, economic and political articles so that you are updated with the happenings across the globe.

It is a fact that your progressing steadily upward in the IELTS Reading band doesn’t happen overnight, however it is not something which cannot be achieved too! As a prospective test- taker who wants to ace the exam, it requires a lot of time, commitment and practice in finding the right resources to target as well as achieve a great score in this module. The above mentioned tips should help you to do that in an enhanced manner and in a much better way. So, go for it!
